East Bay Patriots

A Rhode Island Tea Party Movement

Following are 6 choices that Nancy Liu came up with for our on-line meeting January 14th. During that meeting the majority of people liked option "D". Please let us know by posing a comment if you agree this would be a good choice. We'll be posting costs and other layouts for the back side of the card as well as graphics for a book mark and bumper sticker to this discussion over time.

Following is a larger image of option "D" along with text for the back of the card. Please let us know if you have any other ideas for the text on the back of the card.

I like "D" with the website address on the back , as well as a founding father quote about the government...that pertains to what we're going through now.

Here's one: To restore... harmony,... to render us again one people acting as one nation should be the object of every man really a patriot. (Thomas Jefferson, letter to Thomas McKean, 1801)

Here's another: We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. (Thomas Jefferson, letter to Samuel Kercheval, July 12, 1816)

And another: [A] wise and frugal government... shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government. (Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1801)

And another: Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves, therefore, are its only safe depositories. (Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia, Query 14, 1781)

And another: [T]o preserve the republican form and principles of our Constitution and cleave to the salutary distribution of powers which that [the Constitution] has established... are the two sheet anchors of our Union. If driven from either, we shall be in danger of foundering. (Thomas Jefferson, letter to Judge William Johnson, June 12, 1823)

And another: But a Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever. (John Adams, letter to Abigail Adams, July 17, 1775)

And another: Children should be educated and instructed in the principles of freedom. (John Adams, Defense of the Constitutions, 1787)

And another: Liberty must at all hazards be supported. We have a right to it, derived from our Maker. But if we had not, our fathers have earned and bought it for us, at the expense of their ease, their estates, their pleasure, and their blood. (John Adams, A Dissertation on the Canon and Feudal Law, 1765)

And another: A nation under a well regulated government, should permit none to remain uninstructed. It is monarchical and aristocratical government only that requires ignorance for its support. (Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1792)

And another: We fight not to enslave, but to set a country free, and to make room upon the earth for honest men to live in. (Thomas Paine, The American Crisis, No. 4, September 11, 1777)
The quicker the read the better. I like
"And another: But a Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever. (John Adams, letter to Abigail Adams, July 17, 1775)"

But I would consider shortening it to the last sentence: "Liberty, once lost, is lost forever - John Adams"
These quotes and more from our founders are so relevant to today's government. If only more citizens could hear them and see the connection. I'm amazed at the foresight they had or was it just experience.
I think "D" is the best choice. It stands out more than the others. For the back, I kind of like the Thomas Jefferson quote, "A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything you have." I think it's a little clearer.
Barbara:
I'm sorry, but that quote is not a Jefferson one. From Wikipedia: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Thomas_Jefferson
Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have ... The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases.
Commonly quoted on many websites, this quotation is actually from an address by President Gerald Ford [ to the US Congress (12 August 1974)
Ray Palmieri
Thanks for the info, Ray. I've seen that quote several times and it had been credited to Thomas Jefferson. I just assumed that that was correct. I guess, that's an example of the old adage of what happens when you assume. The bad thing is I've put that in one of my letters to the editor. Hopefully, it won't get printed. But, should it end up on the page, I hope everyone is as ignorant of the source as I was. Barb
D is very simple and professional. It looks awesome. Put the web site address on the back? Maybe other contact info?
D caught my eye as soon as I saw it. I like the idea of a short Founders quote on the back that warns about big government, along with web site address.
I like C and F. marina
I agree with the choice. Also, how do I find out who is supported in the next election? I live in San Jose.
